Can you tell me of any purple coloured plants or magnolia trees that flower in march ?

My friend wants to plant something in his garden that flowers in march to remember his mum who passed away recently. As it would have been her birthday during March is trying to find a purple coloured magnolia if there is one, or some other plant or tree which has purple blooms. Failing that a plant with the name Glenis in its title would be another thing to consider. This could flower any time of year but i would prefer it to be purple in colour if possible. I would be really greatful for your help with this or any ideas you may have. Thanks for your time.

Can you tell me of any purple coloured plants or magnolia trees that flower in march ?

it wont flower in spring but it will be named after his mum and can be planted in his own garden and when it flowers he can cut some flowers and put them on his mums grave etc.

You can choose your own colour etc.
Reply:Crepe Myrtles bloom in the Spring and there are purple varieties. They are beautiful and easy to care for.
Reply:What planting zone are you in?

I am in zone 5 and I'm afraid the only purple I have right now is Crocuses. If your further south you might have luck with a Red bud http://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheets/graph...

or crepe myrtle

If it doesn't have to bloom in March you could do a lilac

Reply:Hyacinth
Reply:I know some but normally they stand still and don't march.
Reply:You could plant a Malus Tree "Lemoinei" oval leaves Reddish/Purple when young, fallowed by wine coloured flowers in the late Spring, and they in turn are followed by Reddish/Purple crab apples. "Cercis" canadensis "Forest Pansy" Has Magenta flowers when in bud that open to Pink, before Heart-shaped reddish/purple leaves appear. Rather a nice idea for a remembrance Tree I would have thought. Prunus "Nigra" has deep Purple leaves, red when young. Pink flowers in mid-spring. Magnolia liliflora "Nigra"10 ft high Hardy, Fragrant, deep Purple flowers.
Reply:Aubritia is purple and flowers this time of year. It is a low growing rockery plant that you will probably have seen in many gardens
Reply:Hellebores are flowering now, you can get them in purple, put them around the base of a magnolia, they will look beautiful.
